Is it stray voltage?

Stray voltage is a small charge on stalls, waterers or milking equipment. You can't see it, but cows feel it. Check off what you're seeing.

Good to know

What causes it

Current runs on the neutral wires, both your barn's and the power company's.

When some of it travels through the ground and the barn's metal, a cow touching a waterer and the floor at the same time feels it.

It can start on your side, the utility's side, or both.

How I test

  • Readings where cows touch: waterers, stalls, the parlor, bunks
  • Tests that show if it's your side or the power company's
  • Watching readings as the vacuum pump and compressor cycle
  • Everything written down to show the power company

What fixes it

Usually ordinary electrical work: fixing bad neutral connections, separating neutral and ground, repairing rusted wiring, or adding an equipotential plane where cows stand.

I test again afterward to prove it worked.

This checker is for information only and can't diagnose your herd. Talk with your vet about health and production problems too.
